Webcomics off the Beaten Path

Postby Captain Thark » Fri Feb 09, 2007 12:42 am

This is a webcomic thread, but not in the usual way.
I'm tired of every webcomic thread coming down to Penny Arcade, 8-Bit theatre, and Cyanide and Happyness. Posssibly some CTRL-ALT-DELETE from Panda, Pious, and Neontoast. Oh, and some dumb ripoff of one of the above that someone thinks is so great 'cause they keep dropping the f-bomb.
So I'm starting a thread about really good comics that are not those.

Sluggy Freelance
This comic is about so many different things it could take days to do justice to its plot. Major elements include, but are not limited to: A gray and white mini-lop rabbit with a glock and a switchblade, parodies, several large robots, vampires, demons, a sinister megacorp, aliens (like the movie), Deadels, satanic kittens, inflatable time machines, The Holiday Wars, Baywatch.
And all of it is in one coherent storyline with better continuity than most TV shows.

Girl Genius
Not as much comedy as some, but it's plot is really good. It's about an alternate Europe sometime in 1800s where mad science is real. It follows the adventures of Agatha 'Clay' (her actual last name a pretty major spoiler) as she copes with her mysterious history and about five thousand other threats (like The Other) that she findas along her way. It's also got some of the best art for any reguarly updated webcomic ever.

Full Frontal Nerdity
One of the funiest comics on the web, if your as nerdy as I am anyway.
There's not a whole lot to say about this one, except a lot of the humor is really geeky. But it is isanely funny though.
Also of note, on the same site is Nodwick, which I havent read all of, that is quite funny as well. And another link on the site goes to ps238, a comic just added to the web which is basically Sky High, but without all the dumb stuff Disney usually adds.

Well, I'll put some stuff down that you didn't mention.

PvP
www.pvponline.com
Webcomic about a fictional game magazine and the hilarity that happens.

Megatokyo
www.megatokyo.com
Kinda hard to describe. Games are involved, and it's usually funny, but it's mainly about the story. Great story, IMO.

Least I Could Do
www.leasticoulddo.com
Very very funny. It's about the man-whore Rayne Summers. Basically, the king of ladies men.

AppleGeeks
www.applegeeks.com
Macs+Humor The story's been picking up, to a more serious level, but still fun.

The only reason I didn't post Megatokyo is that I havent read the whole thing yet.
*Sigh* Yet another thing on my to-do list...
PvP was pretty good, but I feel like it's gotten a lot more repetetive and a lot less funny. I havent read the other ones though.

Inverloch
One of the best web comics I have ever seen.

Gone with the Blastwave
Good comedy + I like the art.

The Noob
Really funny comic about clichequest based on a made up MMORPG. Some parts are REALLY funny.

This one has been getting some major play on RPG message boards. It's quite funny.

Minus is the most surreal comic on the internet. And it's quite funny too. Sort of a mix between FLCL and Calvin and Hobbes.

Be sure to hold your mouse pointer for a second over every comic on the site. You get cool commentary.

EDIT: Ohh... He makes fun of Penny Arcade too...

Unspeakable Vault
WARNING: THIS COMIC WILL ONLY MAKE SENSE IF YOU HAVE READ H.P. LOVECRAFT! IT WILL NOT MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL IF YOU HAVE NOT!
(GOOD NEWS! If you haven't read Lovecraft, you'll be glad to know it's in the public domain! Well, there's some controversy over weather it;s in the public domain, but most of it was written in the 30s, so there's a pretty good chance that it is. Read Lovecraft here! Don't worry, there's no real order to them, just do a little research and find out which one sound interesting to you! The Call of Cthuhu is a great start, though.)

Unspeakable Vault (of doom)!

Taylor and I are going to start posting some of his comics here. We hope this becomes a regular thing.
