Ripping DVDs

Postby Captain Thark » Fri Jul 06, 2007 5:23 pm

Okay I got my iPod. It plays video, and I happen to have some stuff on DVD I want to watch on it.

My question is: how do I rip video from a DVD?

hahaha... that is a good question... the answer is software....
much software exists to do this but what i think you should use is AutoGK (Auto Gordian Knot) it does allot but apparently it also does DVD to AVI (in the DIVX or XVID formats) i'm gunna check out the process and post later.

alright... so i should metion that program is Open Source, just so you know...
OK so first download it... it IS what you want... (why couldn't i find you sooner... :,( )
neway install it is is pretty intuitive just say 'yes' 'ok' and 'done' when it shows up... duh.
then run AutoGK, don't worry about the other stuff they are components, while required to use the program arn't very helpful by themselves... once your in here it is pretty smooth... a couple things are in 1) you gotta pick THE RIGHT vob file in the dvd... (say your dvd drive is d it might be K:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_06_0.VOB) a hint is that it is probably the largest file in that folder so arrange it by size and you prolly have it. change 2 because if you don't you'll get a problem (unless you got a wacked DVD drive).
on three it is totez your call... i would pick the percent one cuz picking a specific size could be VERY bizarre. in 4 set up the sound the way you feel is right set the width right for the ipod thing and i would Dfinatly use XVID unless it is unsupported...
then add the job and push start, easy. the only problem is that it doesn't show progress very well... i can live with that though...

Cool. I found a few other ways to do it, but I'm glad I have something I that I know will work to fall back on.

You've so got to get an iPod. Really, this thing is probably the single most awesome piece of electronics I've seen, next to the iPhone and maybe the Wii. There's just so much the little box can do.

I've got all of my music, an episode of Scrubs, and I can even play Tetris on this puppy. Plus, I've got all the Homestar Runner Podcasts on it.
