There's a lot of anime coming out these days. Some of it's good (Fullmetal Alchemist). Some of it's bad (Afro Samurai). And it's a sad fact that there's some great stuff out there that's awsome, but went unnoticed.
This thread is for uncovering these lost gems so all can see their true brilliance.

To start the project:

Captain Herlock: It's about a space pirate captain who fights demons in space. But it's more awsome than I can possibly describe. Watching it made me long for a large green spacecraft with a skull pasted on the front. This show reminded me why I love scifi. The only weak point is the strange cliffhangerish ending that will never be resolved, the story does resolve, though I can't say any more without spoilers.
Even with this problem Captain Herlock should not be missed, it remains one of my favorites and has quite possibly my favorite oppening theme ever (next to maybe the Starblazers theme).

Afro Samurai was bad then

yes afro samuri is bad...

another of those that never made it into the public eye is Azumanga diaho... before adv had it translated it was going to be one of those animes the entire nation falls in love with.... but for some reason it never became popular..
this anime is about the high school days of 6 girls and there misadventures... the lack of a plot is only partly noticable as you proceed through the series (you laugh to much to tell). you have all the typical girl stereotypes covered, crazy over hyper, super shy yet awesome, slow and spacey, jock not that smart, self contous smart girl, and 10 yr old super genius...
It is REALLY awesome and i suggest you watch it today.

Something with Samuel L. Jackson is bad NOOOOO!!!

I saw a couple episodes of it and it was ok. Episodes need to be longer!!!

Umm, I'm gonna suggest a movie. Check out Memories. It's 3 different movies in one (one after the other after the other). None of them have anything to do with each other. The middle movie was hilarious and the other 2 serious (but good). Defiantly worth checking out. Aaand, for those who haven't seen it, check out Hellsing. Lovely in my opinion, it's got a great soundtrack, looks good and the story/characters are interesting.

I kinda think Hellsing isn't obscure.
And afro samurai is neither obscure nor awesome and therefore not a part of this thread.

Ok, well Memories is I guess. Another movie I just thought of is Cat Soup. It's the creepiest anime I've ever seen. The plot's about 2 cats. One cat died and was taken by the grim reaper. The other cat fought the reaper and got 1/2 the cat's soul back. Now he's trying to get the other 1/2. No speaking, it's all word bubbles with images in it and such. Very very creepy. That pig gives me nightmares.
