Well, XP is about to be obsoleted. Enterbrain announced RPG Maker VX is coming out in December in Japan.

It's most notable features are easier mapping, eventing, and the implementation of vehicles *JOY!*.

Of course, as with XP there are things that seem to be left out of VX for no obvious reason. The battle system supports more cool effects, but has completley eliminated your characters appearing on the screen at all. The resoloution is smaller than XP at 544×416, which is just about the oddest resolution I've ever seen. The new charsets suck out loud, and the backgrounds are literally higher rez versions of the old tilesets from RM2k/RM2k3. Face sets are back though, and look really good.

All in all, there's a lot they're keeping under raps right now. I'm hoping there will be a few more features than advertised at the moment, such as maybe an alternate battle system or two packed with it, because the current battle system looks like it somehow sucks worse than the current one.

internet powers twitching...
actually now that i actually look at all the info it really doesn't seem to be an improvement.
simply put it looks like they are doing to rpgmaker what vista does to windows, that is dumb it down so that advanced users complain and newbs are happy. also it looks prettier. (thus the comparison is complete)
as for that resolution... the only thing i can hope is that they expect to be able to easily port to other devices such as handheld game consoles (that would so be the shit a port to ds...) but otherwise, yes that is a bizarre resolution. i will have to wait till i can steal it to cast judgement though, (we should totally do a review of it when i get back... XD )

Well, all the old scripting features are back. I don't think this will hurt advanced users that much. I like the idea of expanded eventing and vehicles with all the old scripting features of XP. I like the style of the old RTP better in almost every way, though. The problem isn't that they're dumbing it down. The problem is that, like with XP, they're killing good things about the old version for no good reason. For example: They're going back to eight characters on a sheet like in 2k3, which is good for memory, but I can't see how that's going to play nice with any size and any number of frames of animation.

yes the char map being one for one was way better i think that was the single greatest improvement over the previous versions... but like i said i don't think it is an improvement over XP although i will wait to totally rip it apart untill i use it...

Great News! They just released the demo of RPG Maker VX!
...In Japanese.
But I wrote about it on my blog anyway.
