This thread is for talking about adventure games. And maybe even discussing where you can pick up them through abandonware.
Stuff I got:
The Secret of Monkey Island-Pirates are good, and this game has a lot of them. The plot isnt exactly riveting, but it's probably the funiest game I've ever played. Check out the link for where you can download it free and legal! This one is from Lucasarts.
The Dig-Another fine game from Lucasarts, this time a serious hard scifi adventure! The concept for the game was pitched by Steven Speiburg and it was written by Orson Scott Card! The story is pretty good, with more Myst-like puzzles than lucas arts is known for. Still, it's really good, and easily the easist to buy of any game here, with an average price tag of $3.00.
Oh yeah, you anime guys out there? It's got Steve Blum as one of it's main voice actors.
The Neverhood- Myst with claymation. But it's better than that. I really can't say anything about the plot because that would ruin it. This game really has to be played to be understood, but it's really rare, with prices clocking in at fifty to seventy dollars. I might let you borrow it if you ask nice.
Gim Fandango-One of the best games ever made! Great story, great voice acting, and great art direction bring to life this astounding work of art.
The whole thing starts in the mexican underworld, with grim-reaping travel agent Manny Calavera. Manny not doing so hot, he's got to sell a major underworld travel package soon or kiss his chance on getting to the ninth heaven goodby. The story gets better from there, I mean it's Tim Sheafe for crying out loud!
This one is irritatingly rare, expect to pay forty to fifty dollars to get your hands on this gem. I may let you borrow this one as well, though.
Beneath a Steel Sky-A strange cyberpunk adventure, with an interesting plot. You play Robert Foster, a man who until recently, lived in the Gap, a wilderness area between cities. Foster gets captured by the mysterious military regieme that controls a nearby city. Now Foster has to figure out why everyone is trying to capture him, and maybe even save the city!
This game is free from the original game creators! Pick it up from the link.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis-I just got this one today! The plot is pretty much what you would expect from the title; Indy's got to find atlantis and stop the Nazis!
Classic Lucasarts from what I've played so far. That is, it's really good!
It's cheap too, I picked up mine from a thrift store (like most of the game here) for two bucks. The net says that's about the going rate for it too.
King's Quest ?: Heir Today, Gone Tommorow-I'm sort of embarresed to say that I have not actually played much of this one. I just get too afraid of screwing up and dying. I really can't say much about it other than I own it.
Discworld-Old school, but fun. Really got to finish this one too. But the excelent sequel distracted me.
The game is good though, the plot is an amalgam of the Rincewind books and Guards! Guards! If you like the books, you'll like this game. I've been told Eric Idle is rincwind, but I can't get the sound to work.
You can get an abandonware copy at Home of the Underdogs.
Discworld II- Much better than the first game. The graphics are much improved, and so is the plot! Death's gone missing, and Ricewind once again must save the world!
All around good puzzles, and more great discworld humor make this an excelent game.
Also found on Home of the Underdogs.
Discworld Noir-This is one of the longest adventure games I've ever played. It's four glorious disks long, and expertly crafted.
It's the only Discworld game with a completly original plot, and it takes advantage of this. The hero works his way through an increasingly twisted mystery, with constant twists and turns. Highly recomended!
$30 is what you can expect to pay for this classic used. But I got it through Home of the Underdogs.
I might have a few more I don't remember, so I might post more after dinner.
